The Sagamore Council, BSA and Habitat for Humanity are teaming up to collect 5.6 million aluminum cans or enough to build one Habitat for Humanity home and to construct a part of Cary Camp’s major service facility--The McAllister Scouting Center. In the process they will establish a sustainable community recycling program that will continue to raise funds for future Habitat for Humanity homes.

The Scouts CAN Do-It program raises money to build houses and expand camp by encouraging people to recycle their empty aluminum cans. Locally, this new partnership will create a resource to meet the critical affordable housing shortage in the Greater Lafayette area and help underwrite the Council’s first Cary Camp major capital improvement drive in over fifty years. Scouts CAN Do-It provides youth with the opportunity to learn about recycling while giving back to the community. The program will be environmentally beneficial as well as increase the ecological awareness of the organizations involved.

There is a natural fit between the Boy Scouts of America and the Habitat for Humanity. Service is an integral part of the Scouting program. As a result both youth and adults involved in Scouting seek opportunities to volunteer. Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers to help raise money and to construct well-build, affordable housing. Scouts working with Habitat creates a win/win situation for everyone.

1. Lowe's (on the corner of Creasy and 26)
2. Lafayette Aluminum Recycling Center on McCarty (across from Alcoa)
3. The Habitat office
